Jasper National Park – The Largest National Park in the Canadian Rockies

Jasper National Park, at 11,000 km2 (4,200 sq mi or 2,774,500 acres), is the largest park in the Canadian Rockies. The town was originally a trading post run by the Hudson’s Bay and North West Companies. And it retains it’s remote feeling even today. That’s what makes it well worth a visit.

Jasper offers travelers not only some of the Rockies’ most spectacular scenery but also a gondola or skytram ride that whisks you from the forested floor to the treeless alpine landscape at the top of Whistler’s mountain.

If you travel to Jasper on the Rocky Mountaineer, you can explore the beauty of Jasper’s Maligne Lake (pictured above) and Maligne Canyon.

From Jasper, you can travel along the Columbia Icefield Parkway, one of the three most beautiful drives in the world, to Lake Louise. Along the way, you’ll see Athabasca River and Athabasca Falls, the Columbia Icefield, Athabasca Glacier, the Glacier SkyWalk, Peyto Lake, with its turquoise water, and many other sites. We can add a rental car to your Rocky Mountaineer package so you can make this wonderful drive at your own pace. If you’re thinking about driving between Jasper and Banff or Calgary, be sure to read this guide before you go.

From Lake Louise, you are only 56 km (35 miles) from the town of Banff. Both Banff and Lake Louise are located in Banff National Park.

Here is a selection of our best Rocky Mountaineer train tours that feature time in Jasper National Park.
